It was the fourth day of the new wave-spell, when Amy called and told us the house we'd looked at in December had not gone to the owner's errant offspring after all. That the house was maybe, might be, probably-but-not-for-sure, up for rent.
Meanwhile, back at the house in Rainelle, we acquired a renter the same day.
Day by day, the house in the country got cleaner and the house in Rainelle, in the mess of moving, got more cluttered. I must have moved my lucky talismen or rearranged the feng shui luck, because everything started falling apart. One week after we heard the news, we all dominoed, one after the other, at the sheer magnitude of all that needed done in that house in the country.
The water was skunky, but that turned out only to be the water heater sitting full for too long, unused. All the other house problems presented themselves, one after another and demanded attention and we paid attention. Daily going to the farm and working to cut the grass, clear the briers, relocate critters and eradicate bees, including one nest of them inside an old loveseat some fool had left on an outdoor porch upstairs.
Then, one day, the energy shifted forward and we no longer thought of the Rainelle house as home. We were home in the country house. The wind in the pines on one side of the house, the night calls of birds just before they settled in, the frogs in the pond some distance from the house all sang their lullabye and we settled in. Though the moving wasn't finished yet, not even by half.
It was enough though. The powers that be knew we'd not back out now.
And that's when the Rainelle renters backed out.
