Today, there was a teen with her cellphone, texting, her head down as she wandered from side to side, slowly, never changing pace. A tiny girl on a strawberry with wheels sat in the center of the track and seemed to be directing traffic. There was a truckload of kid toys parked near the front of the park -- big wheels, trikes, a little car with a motor. A boy about 2 came barrelling along, wearing only a diaper. He had his fist on his hip and he was giving someone hell in his own language. A woman I took to be his mother translated to an older child that "Jimmy wants his car, don't bother his car." The older child kicked a big wheel and chose a small bike. He went past me, "outta the way, watch out, outta the way..." The little fellow in his car sped into the park and the other kids in the family chose their own riding toy -- with still several left in the back of the truck. The woman I took to the be the Mom and the man I took to be the Dad collapsed onto the bench, looking like very old 20-somethings.
Off to the side of the park, a grandpa with a walker pitched for two little boys who took turns as they practiced batting. Under the picnic shelter, a man in a white shirt addressed about a dozen children and a few adults on the subject of safety and insurance.
As I rode up eleventh from the park toward the funeral home, the tiny pekepo threatened me as he always does, racing along inside his fence, telling me he'd tear me limb from limb.
