bedtime books

I've got the habit of reading fiction before going to sleep. It's a good enough habit when I'm in the middle of a book -- but it's too difficult when it comes down to choosing one in the evening, after the sun has gone down. Nothing fits. I have a whole shelf of unread books, books I think will be interesting. In the daylight, when sun is streaming in the windows, most of these books look like they'd be fine. Come evening and I can't abide the sight of them.

I don't want anything with senseless violence in it. I don't want some snarky writer playing cute in the opening lines. I don't want anything too maudlin or sentimental. Nothing too cerebral will do, either.

My best bet is to already be in the middle of a book before bedtimes comes.

Recently, I read  Front Cover

This was excellent, just the kind of book to read anytime.

I also read:

and:
 Front Cover

Right now, I'm reading:

But I'm reading this Front Cover
outloud to Honey. We read Ava's Man, also by Rick Bragg, and are just now getting to this one.

I just started reading: Front Cover
which is a much better book than its cover.

Suggest a book I should read?
