Well, the first theme I chose was 31 Days to a Stable Environment -- and the work has been going along. In some ways, I wish I had chronicled it all here. But I'll play catch-up just a little.
We are 2 days away from the end of the month, and all we have left to do is hang one door and add a couple of goat-proof fasteners.
WITHOUT SPENDING ONE PENNY!
We thought there'd be plenty of wood in this old chicken house we were given.
A fellow had stacked old boards in this shed, then tore all the tin off the roof -- a smart fellow, there. All the boards he'd stacked inside so carefully many years ago were nothing but noodles of rot. He had not even bothered to crib them -- stacked them on top of each other, slightly slanted. All the rains and snows slid between each one and ruined them. The building itself lent very little we could use.
THIS was the space we had to work with:
I moved and stacked these rocks elsewhere. One or two at a time on a dolly.

We'd just pounded the last nail in the last board we could find
When Jack (in the left of the previous picture), my nephew, came up the driveway
With a truckload of red oak pallets that he had no use for.
SERENDIPITY
The dry lot will be finished with an 8 foot fence with wire into the ground (can't dig under it) and a baffle on top (can't go over it) and 2 strands of electric outside it (ouch to predators). It is small for this winter and we'll expand come Springtime.
